The Hatchlings’ Courage and Leaving Home

Kensuke's Kingdom

The Hatchlings’ Courage and Leaving Home is both a night of practical wildlife protection and a turning point in Kensuke’s decision to return to Japan. As newly emerged sea turtles cross the beach toward the ocean, Michael and Kensuke help those that are stranded or overturned and guard the others from birds. Watching the hatchlings leave for a life whose dangers they cannot know, Kensuke recognizes a lesson for his own long-delayed departure.

The Annual Emergence

Kensuke takes Michael to the beach at night and explains that mother turtles lay their eggs there. Once a year, when the moon is high, the hatchlings emerge and make their way to the sea. The small animals face a difficult crossing: some are weak, and birds may take them before they reach the water. Kensuke has remained to protect them, chasing birds away and helping the young turtles on their way.

Michael first mistakes one hatchling for a crab. Then he sees more emerging from holes in the sand: dozens, hundreds, perhaps thousands, moving across the moonlit beach. The mass emergence turns the shore into a place of coordinated but precarious movement, where a creature’s first journey is also a test of whether it can reach the sea.

Michael and Kensuke Guard the Hatchlings

Michael warns Stella Artois away from a turtle she is nosing, and he and Kensuke begin searching the beach together. When they find a hatchling on its back at the bottom of a hole, Kensuke gently sets it upright. Their work expands into an all-night vigil: they check holes for turtles that are stuck or stranded, carry several too-weak hatchlings down to the sea, and turn dozens right-side up.

At dawn, birds descend to scavenge. Stella Artois barks and chases them, while Michael and Kensuke run at them, shout, wave, and throw stones. Their efforts do not save every hatchling; some are still taken from the water. By noon, however, most have reached the sea, and Michael and Kensuke watch the last of them swim away. The episode presents care not as complete control over nature, but as sustained help within limits: they can improve the hatchlings’ chances, though they cannot protect all of them.

A Lesson in Leaving

As they stand ankle-deep in the water, Kensuke tells Michael that the turtles are small but brave. They do not know what awaits them in the sea, yet they go. He says they may have taught him a lesson, and connects their departure to his own: when a ship comes and they light a fire to be found, he will go with Michael and return to Japan.

The decision marks a change in Kensuke’s relationship to leaving. He has spent years on the island and has helped the hatchlings return to the place where they can begin their lives; now their journey helps him imagine his own passage away from the island. He hopes to find Kimi and Michiya and learn the truth. His resolve is conditional on rescue, but the direction is clear: like the turtles, he will go despite not knowing what he will find.

From Island Vigil to Departure

The hatchling night gives the novel’s later rescue and farewell a meaningful precedent. When the Peggy Sue reaches the island, Michael’s parents are aboard, and he runs from the forest to meet them; Kensuke’s earlier promise to leave has made that homeward journey imaginable. The two departures are not identical: the turtles enter the sea without knowing their destination, while Michael returns to his parents and Kensuke prepares to seek his family in Japan. Yet the shared image of setting out connects courage with accepting uncertainty rather than waiting for certainty before moving.
